November 18, 2024
As you may know, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PC will stop working; it just means you'll be responsible for keeping your device secure and running smoothly.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered a compatibility error, don't worry—there are still several options available to you:
- Ignore the Deadline: While not recommended, you can choose to disregard the end-of-support date. Without ongoing security updates, your device will be vulnerable to cyber threats and viruses, and you'll need alternative solutions to protect it. Additionally, the lack of technical support and non-security updates could affect your computer's performance.
- Switch to Linux: If you're not ready to replace your PC and have the technical skills, you can replace Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Be prepared for some challenges during the transition, so consider this option only if you're comfortable handling potential issues.
- Upgrade Incompatible PCs via a Technical Loophole: If your PC failed the upgrade due to compatibility issues, you might still be able to upgrade by using a workaround. ZDNET provides guidance on this process, which involves a minor registry edit and configuring your PC to use Secure Boot with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Note that proceeding with this method may void manufacturer support and updates.
- Purchase Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESUs): Although Microsoft will stop offering free updates, they will provide Extended Security Updates for a fee. These subscription-based updates will be available for up to three years. However, they are costly, especially for businesses, with prices increasing each year. Educators receive a significant discount. Keep in mind that these updates do not include technical support and are intended to encourage upgrading to Windows 11.
- Buy a New PC: If your current device is outdated, investing in a new PC compatible with Windows 11 might be the best choice. New computers usually offer improved speed, security, and productivity. Be sure to back up your data thoroughly before making the switch to avoid data loss.
Consider these options carefully to determine the best path forward for your needs.
